Tips for Preventing Gingivitis

September 5, 2023

Gingivitis is a common form of gum disease that causes swelling of the gums, redness, and irritation. If not treated promptly, it can lead to periodontitis and tooth loss. The most common reason for gingivitis is poor oral hygiene. If you have periodontitis, the best thing you can do is to treat it quickly by practicing good oral hygiene. Some things you can do to prevent/treat gingivitis include:

  • Brushing At Least Twice a Day: You should be brushing at least twice a day for a minimum of 2 minutes at a time. Better yet, brush your teeth after every meal for maximum effectiveness.

  • Flossing Before You Brush: You should floss at least once daily before brushing. It helps loosen food particles that are stuck between teeth. This helps make a more thorough cleaning for when you brush your teeth.

  • Regular Dental Visits: Visit your local dental office twice a year for professional teeth cleanings. Your dentist will deep clean your teeth and monitor for signs of concern.

  • Watch What You Eat: Eating healthier foods and foods without high levels of sugar will reduce your risk of getting gingivitis. It will also help you be healthier overall.
